S. M. Z. (Suna) de Villiers was born on 25 May 1916 in Cape Town, where she grew up and attended Jan Riebeeck High School.
She studied at Stellenbosch University. She was married to Meyer de Villiers, who was professor at the Department Afrikaans and Dutch, Stellenbosch University.
